Katrina: Our thoughts and response
We have been watching the coverage of the aftermath of Katrina and trying to decide the best way to respond. The company we work for, Cox Communications, has operations in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge was damaged, but expects to be totally operational soon. New Orleans is another story. Cox has a relief fund for the approximately 1000 employees who are employed by the New Orleans system. We will contribute to that fund as well as the Red Cross and to the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelity to Anamials. We’d like to go to the area and volunteer our time too, but according to the news, the government would rather we donate money right now. When they’re ready for us, we’ll go down there and do whatever they need us to do.
In the meantime, I think I’ll get started with my local volunteering. I’ve been so consumed with work and school, that I haven’t had much time to volunteer. In one of my last college courses, we had to volunteer our time to a group disimilar from our own. I was always interested in helping women and kids, so I decided to help the homeless and / or abused women at the Shade Tree shelter. It looks like now is the time to get started.
When we watch something as horrific as the coverage from New Orleans, it’s easy to forget the daily suffering of people in our own cities, towns and neighborhoods. Please remember your neighbors when donating to the hurricane victims.
