It’s so easy to do, which is a good thing when you hate user support as much as I do, and I find it to be the closest thing to being there. With her in Alaska and me in Vegas, anything we can do to stay close is a good thing.

It’s been nearly a month since Mother passed away. I’ve been trying to deal with her death as best as I can, but I’ve been feeling slightly off balance for most of the past four weeks.

My mind has trouble dealing with tenses as they relate to my mother. I don’t have trouble accepting the reality of her death, rather I have trouble because my mind hasn’t caught up.

So much reminds me that my mother isn’t around. Simple, everyday things like seeing dish towels or silverware reminds me how she would buy those things for me because she recognized that Maria and I just didn’t notice that we needed new towels or silverware. I think of her when I have a question that I know she can answer. I think of her when I start or complete a remodeling project and want to show her so I can hear what she thinks.

Every time I think of her in that way, that thought is quickly followed by a realization that she’s gone and I won’t see her for awhile. I’m not sure I ever want to lose my desire to share the important and not so important events in my life with her. I guess that right now, I’m glad that so many things do remind me of her, how much she loved me and how important she is to me.

My mother passed away on Wednesday morning. She was the single largest influence on my life and deserves most of the credit for everything that is good in me. She was about the best mother anyone could ask for. She loved my sister and me, and she put our needs first. She was also extremely consistent in disciplining us. If she said no, it meant no. As we got older, she didn’t meddle in our lives or try to push herself on us. She did her job, which was to love us, take care of us, teach us right from wrong and let us live our lives as adults. She was always there to support us, and I’m very grateful that I was there to help her at the end.

I could write a lot about her here, but I decided to create a blog site so her family and friends could put remembrances of her there. The site is http://marti.2knuckleheads.net. Please visit the site and put things that you remember or appreciate about her there.

We had to put our beloved dog, Suzy Pee Pee Head, down and two weeks later we found out that my mother has cancer. Two weeks later, Maria got hit while driving the Jeep. Obviously, the biggest news there is my mother’s illness. I’m not going to put much about that in this blog because that is for her to do if she wishes. The good news is the radiation treatments are about over and she’s about to start chemotherapy.

Maria and the Jeep came through the accident ok. Maria was jolted pretty good, but unharmed. The Jeep needs a new fender and bumper. Those should be replaced soon. That Jeep sure is tough.

Here’s what she has to say about him, “he loves his new formula, rice cereral, and now carrots. Of course he is the smartest baby ever, he can crawl and he can nearly sit up unaided. He had the sweetest laugh and the most beautiful smile. I got to watch him last night and took these photos….. I know, I know, grandmas and the babies it is almost enough to make you sick, but then again sweet things usually do. ”

I haven’t posted in a long time. A few things have happened recently. The biggest news is Maria’s promotion to MTC supervisor. As with most promotions, it’s a lot more work without much more pay. I’m very happy for her and I know she’ll do a great job. She’s only been on the job for a week and is coming in during a very critical time. The company is launching switched digital broadcasting, and there is a lot of new gear and concepts for everyone to get a handle on in a hurry. I’m a bit envious that I can’t play with the new things she and her folks will get to play with.

We took a Vegas vacation and still didn’t get to see as much of Vegas as I’d hoped. We did get to golf 3 times, once in extremely windy conditions at Bear’s Best. That was the most brutal round of golf I’ve ever played. The wind was blowing so hard, the flag sticks were just about horizontal. It was nice to stay home, but was too short.

I’m half way through my very last class for my degree. I couldn’t write the portfolio because the class covers Token Ring and NetWare, neither of which I’ve ever used. The good news here is that the class is pretty easy given my background.

One final tidbit. We bought the Dance Dance Revolution game and mat and are trying to learn to dance. We’re as competitive with this as we are with anything else. I’ll have to put up a web cam one day so we can help the world laugh a little bit. I’ll post the link to that when it happens. DDR really is a fun way to get some exercise, and you DO get a lot of exercise playing this game.

This past Saturday was a big day for Maria. First, she competed in the Archery competition of the local Corporate Challenge, and she won a silver medal. There were only two women in her division, but it was a silver medal nevertheless.

That evening, she won the General Manager’s Excellence award for her work on preparing the network for telephony. Her VP presented the award and spent several minutes describing the hard work, dedication, and innovation she displayed in accomplishing the task. When the award was presented she received a 2-minute standing ovation. The award and recognition were well deserved, and I was extremely grateful and proud that she received such a prestigious award. It was obvious that anyone who knows her felt the same way.

Way to go Mimi!!

Tyler took some leave and came to town to visit family. I didn’t know if he’d feel like seeing us, but he did. He called on Friday, and I picked him up from his dad’s and we went out to eat and saw V for Vendetta. We were all pretty tired after the movie, but we tried to watch Serenity when we got home. Even though it’s a very good movie, none of us could make it through to the end, and we all went to bed. The next day, we watched basketball and ran to the store for some Boulder Potato chips. They are just evil.

Tyler looked good, and seems to be in good spirits. We’re so thankful he came home. He’s looking forward to life after the Marines, and I’m sure he’ll do very well. It was a real pleasure to see how much he’s matured, and how he’s learned to work in a team.
